FITTING and cleaning YOUR COVID-19 SHIELD

covid-19shields.com covid-19 face shield fitting instructions

A few tips on fitting and cleaning your shield:

  • The covid-19 face shield should fit snugly and comfortably
  • The headband is designed to sit 1" above your eyebrows
  • Tuck the tails/ends of all straps into the slots provided
  • Refer to the assembly video above and feel free to email us a photo if you find it's not fitting like a glove on you
  • We are producing shields with and without removable film. Ensure that you have removed the film from both sides prior to assembling the shield if yours has the film. You will be able to tell right away because it won't be clear to see through.
  • Cleaning - because the shield is 100% plastic it can be fully cleaned with soap and water, alcohol, or some have been using sani-cloth/wipes. We suggest doing a test on a small area not on the front of the shield.

The covid-19 face shields can be made of 0.020" or 0.030" thick PETG (Polyethylene terephthalate glycol) or PET. PETG and PET are food safe, economical plastics used to hold items such as beverages. They are FDA-compliant, optically clear, impact resistant materials that can be cut on a CNC, waterjet, or laser cutter. It can also be die cut/punched easily or cut with scissors. It is a chemical resistant material that can be cleaned using soap and water, alcohol, or sani-cloth/wipes. Do a test on a small area not on the front of the shield to see what works best for you.

design considerations

We have developed a flat pattern covid-19 face shield that can be compactly shipped and made in communities around the world by CNC, laser cutter, water jet, die cut, or by hand with scissors. The face shield has been reviewed and approved by hospital facilities and medical providers in 26 US States and Canada. We have received 100 percent positive reviews from Nurses, ED doctors, Anesthesiologists, Respirator Therapists, OB/GYNs, EMTs, Radiologists, and Drive Thru Testing Sites. We have also delivered to skilled nursing facilities that serve the elderly. We are happy to hear our shield is considered very comfortable by medical providers and that it's reported to provide excellent coverage.

The shield is currently in use at Kaiser, UCLA, USC, Metropolitan Hopsital of New York, Mission Community Hospital, and San Francisco General Hospital among others. The shield is fabricated from 100 percent plastic PET or PETG, which allows it to be easily cleaned prior to use. It provides substantial coverage by extending below the chin, curving around the face, as well as covering overhead. We have moved into a larger phase of production which enables us to produce thousands of shields per day at a low cost.

Thank you to Lucien Junkin for his initial design explorations and inspiration, and to David Elliott of Local 44 for fronting the funds for the first batch of materials. We likely would not have produced any shields without the support and encouragement of these two individuals.
